The trek is rated Easy to Moderate and is suitable for beginners and families. The trail from Chopta to Tungnath (3.5 km) is a well-marked path through forests. The stretch from Tungnath to Chandrashila summit (1.5 km) is steeper but manageable. Total distance is about 5-6 km one way. No prior trekking experience required, but basic fitness is recommended.
The best seasons are April to June (spring/summer) and September to November (autumn). Spring brings rhododendron blooms and green meadows. Autumn offers the clearest skies and best summit views. July-August is monsoon season and not recommended due to heavy rainfall and slippery trails. December to March brings heavy snowfall and the trek may be inaccessible.

The camp at Chopta sits at about 2,600m. The highest point on the trek, Chandrashila summit, is at 4,000m. Altitude sickness is possible but uncommon on this trek due to the gradual ascent. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol the night before your trek, ascend slowly, and listen to your body. If you experience severe headache, nausea, or dizziness, descend immediately. No special acclimatization is typically needed for this trek.
Layered clothing (temperatures can drop significantly at altitude), sturdy trekking shoes with good grip, a warm jacket or fleece, rain gear (especially in September-October), sunscreen, water bottle, sunglasses, a small daypack, and any personal medications. The camp provides bedding and basic amenities.
